TM404 – Against The Clock
Andreas Tilliander makes a track using his huge collection of synths and drum machines.
Swedish producer Andreas Tilliander emerged from the glitch scene of the early ‘00s, but over the past few years has turned his attention to making rich, dub techno-inspired music with his formidable collection of hardware under the TM404 alias.
Largely limiting himself to a few key pieces of vintage Roland gear – the TB-303 bassline synth and TR-606, TR-707 and TR-808 drum machines – Tilliander’s deep, analog machine music scored itself a place on FACT’s list of the 25 best dub techno tracks of all time, making him a prime candidate for an Against The Clock session.
Using his trusted Roland equipment alongside modern gear including the Elektron Octatrack, Tilliander builds up an atmospheric acid house track in just 10 minutes with no laptop in sight.
“I don’t know if it was a good track but I guess that’s not the point,” Tilliander says. “I was trying to program the 303s while recording, which is strange for a listener to hear. It was good. There were some parts where I forgot to use different synths but there’s plenty anyway so, I’m satisfied.”
TM404’s new album Acidub is out now via Kontra-Musik.
